View Full Version : "Are you stockpiling?"

Ran into Food Lion today to buy Gatorade for my husband. I always buy 1 case of each flavor (for variety), so I had 4 cases in my cart.

The cashier said in a loud voice "Are you stockpiling?"

I about fell over when she said that, but it brought up some good conversation in the line behind me. Seems lots of people think that "this world is going to He!! in a handbasket".

One woman said "I am! I have at least a 1-year supply of stuff in my basement." (At that point I did look at her cart and she wasn't kidding - it was packed with sale items)

One man said "That's probably not a bad idea considering how insane this world is getting."

Just thought it was interesting & would pass it on.

Was she asking (or did she imply) that you shouldn't be doing such a thing, or that there was some company policy that she couldn't sell to you if you were?

By the way... stock-piling is a politically incorrect term...
What we're doing is heeding the Lord's counsel, and preparing for ourselves, a reasonable amount of food storage. :wink5:
I'm just saying... :a0 (21):

Many people are stockpiling up. If you frequent other websites, lots of people are talking about it and putting up "preps". I have been surprised at how many non-members know about the Church canneries & use them for stocking up.

No, she didn't seem to be implying anything. I think she's been paying attention to the shopping carts and has noticed a change in buying habits. Maybe it got her to thinking. She just took me by surprise cuz most of the cashiers know what I buy and 4 cases of Gatorade is normal for me.

LOL. Well....I did tell her "No, I'm not stockpiling Gatorade", so I guess I did good. :l0 (20):

I think what I find so fascinating is that people are talking about it. It's not a well-kept secret like when I was a kid.

Then I went to the Farmer's Market and people were talking about doubling their garden space this year.

I also find it comforting to know that others are paying attention to what's going on around them.

I know multiple people who have really restarted prepping or adding to their food supplies in the last few months. I also feel practically driven. Also me & my friends both find that we are being helped getting things (usually on good deals) that we need or are low on. (play Twilight Zone music here)

We too have been feeling a bigger push/urgency to get more added to our storage. It has been hard with hubby being unemployed for the past 22 months, but money has been provided in unusual ways for us just at the right times to get good deals for what we need. We are even pushing our married and single kids to really stock up more. Since Jan we have been dry packing items as a family. Our ward owns a can sealer and it's been at my house for the past 20 months, so we figured we may as well use it. We even ordered the powdered whole eggs from EE that is this months group special.

We are even talking about getting chickens. Even though we rent, the house sits on almost an acre and is zoned for animals. I know there are others in our trac that have chickens because I can hear the roosters. And hopefully we can get some topsoil this year to get a garden in.

I started feeling a sense of urgency last summer, which was weird cuz we already had so much!

Isn't it amazing how we're helped find good deals? Today I went to Rite-Aid to pick-up an Rx and found all those B1/G1 sales on items we use constantly.

THEN I wandered down the Easter aisle. A young lady was unloading a huge box of Valentine's Day candy they'd found in the back and it was 90% off....how can you go wrong?

I was doing the Happy Dance all thru that store! :l0 (61):

I think that's wonderful. Being unemployed is so frightening, yet the Lord is providing.

I think we might be long lost wonder-twins with the power to Vulcan mind meld.

Yesterday, I went to Rite-Aid to score BOGO-Free Fish Oil + $6 coupon + $10 UpRewards= FREE! One of several victories this week. Yep, Hubby thinks I'm the bomb.

Walked in, worker lady unloaded a cart full of 90% off Valentine's chocolate.

And do you know what went through my head???

Wait for it....

Wait for it....

Yeah, that's right. My FIRST thought was- "OOOOOOh, if only the GLO girls could see me now! Uh-huh, Uh-huh!"

My second thought was "how much will Hubs let me grab?"
Answer- "WHOA! 90% off??? Grab it all."

Love my man.

By the way, did you clean out the last of the Thermacare heat wraps=Free w/ coupon? I know I did. :l0 (6):

I talked to the manager of the St. Louis Bishop's Storehouse a few days ago. He said the number of food storage supplies they have sold has increased three-fold within the last year, and 65% of those canning supplies are non-members.

He claimed Glenn Beck was the reason....probably true.

WooOOooOOoooooo! **twilight zone**

The Thermacare heat wraps were sold out, but I got a raincheck.

I did think about you as I put fish oil in my cart!

Oh yeah....I was defiitely thinking about all the Chocolate Addicts here at GLO when she put the 90% sign up. I swear I have a bedroom that smells like chocolate cuz the closet is packed with my stash. It's like having a scented candle in that room, only better!!

You need to move here - we have a Russell Stover outlet store. Their chocolate truffle easter eggs are 5/$1 right now. :biggrin5:

I would reply something like:

What this? - oh no - I'm not drinking this stuff.
No, I'm extracting the electrolytes to use in my nuclear fusion experiments.

It's true, I've seen the mini-reactor in his basement.

"If you think THIS is stockpiling, you should see the 12 cases I already have in my closet!!"

Glad to know that some people are listening to GB and the Spirit telling them to get moving.

Just wait until the general population figures out food is going way up and supplies way down . . . . there won't be stockpiling - there will be hoarding (that is getting stuff just to get stuff whether it has any useful value to them or not IMO). And when they don't get food there will be riots & worse.

Glad you mentioned that! I'm heading up to visit my Mom in Missouri next week and have to drive right by an RS outlet store. Will make it a point to stop in! Thank you!

Hopefully by the time that happens, the rest of us that are prepared can just hunker down & stay safe.

exactly Noah's Ark. Hunker down & stay safe - stay out of the public unless absolutely necessary. When disasters like this hit then people feel like the law isn't able to function and take advantage of it. Remember Katrina . . . heck there even the LEO's were taking advantage of things.

When I am asked if I am stockpiling or worse yet hording, I tell them that I am getting ready for a big party. They seem to accept that.

Now if I could only explain the cats...

I did that last year at the Dollar Store. I said "Family Reunion - I'm worn out already!" :l0 (8):

I laughed out loud for real and my daughter wanted to know what I was laughing at. I had to share. She laughed, too.

Hm, going to do your relatives in or are you all going on a . . . ahem . . . hunting party?
