View Full Version : Tainted Radioactive Food?

A friend told me to get my tuna fish supplies intact now because of the possibility of radiation contamination in future cans. I am wondering if this is an issue and if there are any other foods that we should buy while they are still safe? It doesn't look like the United States will get enough radiation to matter but some of our food comes from the ocean or other countries. What do you all think?

Relax. Breath in. Breath out.

Tuna is not a bottom feeder. The possible (though not established) radioactive water that may be in the ocean is heavier than normal water and would sink to the bottom. Even tuna is among the fish that has the least mercury in it. The only reason you have that warning on the can is because so much of it is eaten. So I would be more wary of the mercury content in the can of tuna than the radiation content. I suppose if you are still concerned, you could buy a Geiger counter and test your tuna salad before consuming it.

I like this quote regarding the Fukushima plant. It puts it in perspective.

What has this earthquake taught us? That it’s much, much riskier to choose to live next to the ocean than it is to live next to a nuclear power station.
And this one:

Yet in Japan, you have radiation zealots threatening to order people out of their homes, to wander, homeless and panic-stricken, through the battered countryside [in the winter I might add], to do what? All to avoid a radiation dose lower than what they would get from a ski trip.

Thanks Ligure for the info and the breathing coaching - worked great! OK - so the tuna will be safe. So is there anything we do need to be concerned about as far as the food supply? I'm not freaking out here - just wondering.

Radiation found in Japan’s food, water

NARA, Japan | Fears of nuclear fallout grew during a wet Sunday after officials reported traces of radioactive elements in milk, spinach, water and rain across northern and central Japan and technicians continued to battle overheated reactors at the Fukushima power plant.

I'm buying tuna at Publix this week because 4-packs of 5 oz. chunk light tuna is 2/$4.00. At this point, I'm more concerned about the escalating foods prices than pollution. How did 50 cent 6 oz. tuna get to be 89 cents a 5 oz. can so fast?!
