View Full Version : What's your April prep goal? ...

March is almost over - how is that possible?
Veggie seeds. Since Burpee says they never got my order and my check never cleared the bank, I guess ordering seeds will be on my list.
Oil lamps. I need to decide which ones I want and how many we'll need.
Canned goods.
Bins to hold water & bleach jugs in my crawlspace.
Liquids, liquids & more liquids. Water, juice, soda, bleach, vinegar.
Rain Barrels. I have 2 of them sitting outside that need to be cleaned up & attach the downspout converter to them.
Soooooooooooo - what's on your prep list?

Pay for the freezer & beef from last month . . . . :d0 (59):
Plant the garden with cool season crops if it will stop snowing!
Keep plants alive & growing that I started from seed.
Find hot deals on more food items including hot deals after Easter on chocolate!
Finish master gardener classes. I am retaking them since my son is in the class. I am allowed to audit them even though I have been a certified master gardener for over ten years. The last two weeks was on vegetables and it was a good refresher. There is always a tip or two to learn.
I just finished making another Wonder Box.

Already? Wow!
We are getting a new stove delivered Thursday. OK, that's technically still March, but barely. The old one was about 15 years old and the oven coil blew out. Since the stove top was weak if more than one burner was in use, we decided it was time to get a new one. That was great news, as the old one had a glass top and we couldn't use it for pressure canning.
We will be putting in a well in April. That's a biggie!
I'll keep an eye out for more canned food sales and, of course, sales on post-Easter Chocolate. Great minds think alike, Earthling!

The new stove was installed today. Can't wait to use it! As I previously mentioned, the replacement was precipitated by the oven coil blowing out on Saturday. I was warming up the oven for a loaf of sandwich bread and had just started kneading a loaf of raisin bread when I heard a pop. Great timing, huh? Luckily, my neighbor was home that day and I was able to use her oven.

Yippee for the new stove!
I had mine replaced last year for the same reason. I heard a loud pop and stupid me - I opened the oven door & flames came shooting out! We have a home warranty so it got replaced BUT I asked if I could pleeeeeze have a stove without a glass top. No.

I've got a couple of cheap ones. I'd like a nice one. I tried several at the Bosch store last year and found one that I really liked. That one is far more then I would pay. I'd buy a new AR15 with that kind of $$$ before I bought that.

Just a white bread, but I use honey instead of sugar and add 1/4 C potato flakes. We like it and it holds up well for the week it typically takes us to eat it. The cinnamon raisin bread was my first effort and it really turned out great. Will definitely do that again!

I love potato bread. It seems like the potato flames make it a little firmer and easier to slice.
I'm making cinnamon rolls today. I've got the dough rising right now. Will frost with a cream cheese frosting while they're still warm. Hubby is happy, happy, happy.

I just saw a Bosch grinder today (an attachment for the Bosch mixer). I like that it is compact and can be taken apart for cleaning. I like that it has a wide range of fine to coarse grinds. And you can grind beans, corn and other grains. All of that is good. But it doesn't grind fine enough for pastries and is a little on the coarse side for bread. Since 90% of the reason for a grinder is for bread and other baking, I just can't see getting a grinder that doesn't grind a very fine flour.
I can't tell what the difference is between the Diamant and the Country Living mill. I have the Country Living mill, it's about 1/3 the price of the Diamant. And it's made in the US (a big thing for me.) With the power extension bar, it is very easy to turn and get a very fine flour.
Someone recently pointed me to the GrainMaker mill, also made in the US and the design is very similar to the Diamant and Country Living. But the reviews say that it is much more difficult to turn than Diamant or CLM.
On all of these--Diamant, CLM, GMM--you can add a motor to turn the flywheel. I've also seen plans for powering it with a bicycle.
Being easy to turn is a big, BIG issue for me. In my mind if it takes superhuman strength to turn the grinder to get a decent flour, it's really not worth the money, even if it just costs $80.

Some of you have items on your list which would take me years to fulfill.
A well, gardens, new stoves, oil lamps... wow.
I do have the Country Living Mill on my list, as well as a wood burning stove for the big canvas tent, and another much lighter all season family tent too. But these are more long term (or at least over the next several months, goals).
I do want to add a couple super pails of sugar to our stores.
The biggest thing on my Apr list is taking my son to the MTC. :20:
That first face is me, the second one will be the wife... OK... it could actually go either way.
Mirk, are we still invited to go to Church with you and your family on the 1st of May?
We'll be staying in Sandy, UT, on Sat and Sun nights.
Hopefully, I'll pass my classes this semester and graduate with a bachelor's degree in CIT and then sometime soon my husband and I will put in our papers for a mission(probably Dec., Yes, I'm a senior citizen.)
My husband is working hard on the garden and fruit trees.

Noah's...Better check on putting oxygen absorbers in your seed containers. I'm thinking that I've read that removing the oxygen will kill the seeds. I have to be out of town a couple of days, starting very early tommorow morning, but I'll see what I can find out about it when I get back. Phylm

The Black Russian Rye bread is my favorite. Hubby won't eat it, so I usually split it with my neighbor - her hubby won't eat black bread, either.
I just got a call from PP last night. They were confused because I'd placed 2 orders that were so similar.
I said "that's cuz you only allowed 3 of each monkey bread per order, so I had to place 2 orders." :l0 (51):
LOL - yes, I have 3 of their red bowl sets, the free egg slicer, 2 donut cutter, lots of their free syrups & jams. My pantry runneth over!
Their buttermilk biscuits & cinnamon roll mixes are also excellent.
The only thing I won't buy from them is their donut mixes. I got a "free" mix with their donut pan and they were good, but there's no way I'd pay those prices. If they're ever $2.99 I would, but until then - nope.
I love that place! Since they have a 2+ year shelf-life, I know none of it will go to waste.
Ooooh - their tortilla mixes are good!

I have twenty 6-#10-can boxes as a base for a twin bed, topped with a good inner-spring mattress. We did away with the queen bed, and built a 3-sided plywood frame, topped with plywood that is just high enough to clear 5 gallon buckets. With bedskirts and coverlets, no one would think there was food under there.
In the mobile home we rented before buying here, we had two 62 gallon food grade plastic barrels filled with grains, etc., placed in a corner of the living room. We put a triangular plywood cover over the two, covered it with a blue sheet to the floor, and placed the TV on it. There was room around the barrels, so I stored bottles of water there, too.
You can discreetly store a lot of food under your beds.

I've had 'pasta' rolling around in the back of my mind for a while now. I always feel the need, often to the point that I put off other purchases as 'frivolous'. I also price things in my head in relation to prepping. "That blu-ray movie costs the same as two cartons of Spam." or "That Wii game is 6 #10 cans of freeze dried veggies"
*Edit* Not 30 minutes after I posted this, I walked into the grocery store and saw a sign. "Free case of bottled water when you buy this blu-ray movie". Not exactly divine providence, but I'll take what I can get!

There's a good sale on canned tomatoes this week at one of the grocery stores, so I'll be stocking up on more of them, I also plan on taking a lot of my frozen chicken, etc out of the freezers, defrosting them and canning it up to store on my shelves. :d0 (7): Good idea.
When we began to see where food prices were going a couple of years ago, we began to can meat whenever we saw a good sale: pork roast at $1.00 or so, chicken legs and thighs below 50 cents a pound, hamburg and boneless chuck at close to $2.00. At the same time, I made sure to pick up a case or two of canning jars and extra lids every month. I even bought a case of Kerr pint jars this morning when I saw them at $7.50 at Dollar General. We figure we have enough jars to can up the contents of our two freezers if necessary, plus do the garden produce that's coming at us like gangbusters. Could also solar dehydrate
vegetables and fruit, if necessary.
Stopped at DG for some breakfast bars for our temple trip tomorrow, and to pick up some cheap cat food for a skinny little half-grown cat that apparently got tossed out here that I have been feeding for a couple of weeks. After we got home, she finally brought out four kittens that she had hidden under the deck. We put down some milk for them, and now I guess I'll have to buy some name brand food for her.
Anyone want a cute kitten??????

My April prep goal is to not freak out and bankrupt us :P
I'm still pretty new to the whole prepping thing in general. We have about 3-4 months of food and a couple of packs of band-aids, hand sanitizer and cat food but obviously there's lots of room for improvement! We also have the recommended amount of water storage for 2 weeks which was a big load off my mind when it finally got taken care of, whew!
I'm going to buy a big bucket of cornmeal that Walmart has on sale this week, and maybe some powdered milk as well. We still have a lot of debt so I have to be really careful which is kind of a pain :frown5: I keep reminding myself that the prepared and the righteous need not fear but I am neither righteous or prepared so eek!!! I just hope that if TSHTF next week the Lord will be mildly lenient with those who are diligently trying, you know? I also worry about my friends who are newlyweds - I know they don't have a years worth of supplies yet. We've been married 4.5 years so I don't think we count as newlywed any more dangit.
I also want to get started on square foot gardening this month if it will EVER STOP SNOWING. I wasn't aware we had traveled back in time to January! Stinkin' snow.

I bought one of those "behind the door" wire shelving units. It's got 7 wire shelves! I installed it on the inside of my door that goes into the crawlspace area and that's where I'm putting stuff I need to put my hands on right away.
What a great idea to add space! I'm going to look into that. Would be perfect for getting the spices off the heavy shelves that can be used for something else. Wonderful! Now I get to start planning on the "something else." :lol (2):

Now I'm just waiting for my yogurt bites in the #10 cans, coconut oil, coconut cream & gallon buckets of shredded coconut.
Which coconut oil did you decide to buy?

Which coconut oil did you decide to buy?
I ordered the Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions. I took advantage of the Buy 1/Get 1 Free sale. I bought 3 and got 3 free.
The sale ends today if anyone's interested. http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/vi...oconut_oil.htm (http://www.tropicaltraditions.com/virgin_coconut_oil.htm)
Also got some coconut cream concentrate for my virgin Pina Colada's and two 1-gallon buckets of coconut (shredded & chips).
Today I bought packages of rechargeable batteries to go with my new solar battery charger.

Garage is a no-go down here in AZ.
I only wish I had a basement.
This stuff is really starting to clutter up our bedroom something fierce.
But... the oldest leaves in 3 weeks and so we have 2 years to use his room, until we have to figure out something else. :biggrin (2):
Or....... we'll end up using it before he returns....
Have you considered a root cellar? Dad always had one wherever we lived as I grew up in Utah. I have longed for one myself over the years, many of which have been in Arizona. About 4 years ago a friend of ours took us to see her Mom's cellar in Chandler Az. We couldn't believe someone had put one in in Arizona. It was about 115' outside. The celler was about 70'! When I get back to Az. I intend to try and dig one! :)

I've been on a cheese kick lately. I ordered five pounds of cheddar and a pound of Gouda off of Amazon. Also, in six weeks my coworker's cheese from his goat farm will be ready, and I'll pick up some of that and stick it on the shelf. I like goat cheddar.
In fact, high end expensive cheese is my way of rewarding myself after a cycle of HCG drops.
But I am also thinking of going to the cannery and picking up some more basics. Not only might I need more food to share with the problems that are coming, but I also want to be ready in case I add another adult to the household.

LOVE goat cheese!
We've been thinking the same thing...our daughter & her hubby have 2 girls and a little boy on the way. If things get rough, they may be living here, so we want to make sure we have enough.
Enough for the 2 of us is sure different than enough for 7 of us. :w00t:
It could end up being 9-10 of us if the other daughter, her hubby and our older son end up here.
Sure wouldn't mind having the extra people here, tho - especially since 3 of them would be men, which means protection.

I'm not great with setting goals, but I'm really good at stocking up when I feel like I should. This month has been mostly my 3-month supply. (That's a misnomer, though. It's a supply of shorter term food stuffs in amounts as much as we can use in it's current packaging by the time it's too old to use. Which is a mouthful, yeah, so 3-month supply it is.) This month has been ramen & pasta mostly.

My husband and I are very new to food storage. We finally felt a fire lit under us. We hadn't really talked about it, but I felt the urge and brought it up only to discover that he had come to the same conclusion. The next day we sat down and created a list of how we typically eat and the quantity we needed to buy to maintain that for a year. With that list in hand each time we went to the grocery store (and keeping an eye on specials elsewhere), we accomplished it in about 3 months! We've been adding to it every since.
I just set up a simple table on the computer listing the items, what our goal was and what was still needed and brought that list along. It kind of kept it from feeling overwhelming and was so much easier than we had anticipated.

That is exactly what I need to do, hiccups. I've been concentrating on fine-tuning my long-term storage items that don't need to be rotated and have let my short-term storage slide.
Now it's time for me to get my pantry items stocked back up again - canned goods, pasta, ramen noodles (we love 'em!), etc.

I added 2 packages of just-add-water muffin mix and 1 box of brownie mix to the storage today. And 25 lbs of cornmeal. I'm still not anywhere near where I want to be, but I'm slowly making progress. I do know we have a year's supply of toothpaste so that's something right? :)

Don't forget this is "chocolate 1/2 price day." Already hit the post-Easter sales this morning. Hey! It's a staple, as far as I'm concerned!

We just bought some more shelves to have a place to store all the stufff we keep getting. We have rearranged our storage area to have space to put these new shelves up. Last week I went out and stocked up on a lot of short term storage items, i.e canned veggys, fruits, boxed cereals that were on sale, etc. My sons girl friend was helping us with this project and was amazed at our "grocery Store" we have in the basement. even with all we have, there are a lot of things I still plan to add - such as more charcoal, T.P. and more Coleman fuel, OTC med's, etc. Always seems there's more to do.
