This month I'm going to buy several cases of 1/2 gallon canning jars and fill them with rice, beans & pasta.
I've seen videos where the oxygen absorbers are added to the mylar bags before they're sealed in superpails, but I'm not sure about adding them to the glass jars.
Should I put 1 in each jar?

Yes.
Glass jars are much the same as the #10 cans in regards to the Oxygen absorbers.
I put 5 to 6 in the 6 gallon super pails (w/mylar bags) before sealing them up.
Also, the folks at Honeyville say the unused absorbers can be saved for about 6 months if put into a mason jar and placed in the freezer.
The mason jar limits the oxygen they're exposed to, and the freezer stops the generation of heat, which is how they work (once they're exposed to air).

You can buy a clip to re-close the bag when you buy oxygen absorbers at the church cannery. Costs about $1.35, when I last bought one, and the absorbers were 8 cents apiece in packs of 100. If you reseal them* as quickly as you can, they seem to last fine indefinitely.
*I reseal the absorbers while my husband seals the pails.

Read the article at http://preparednessadvice.com/food_storage/testing-oxygen-absorbers/ it covers how to test oxygen absorbers to tell if they are still good and it discusses the clips.

I've been told there are an assortments of ways to "save" unused absorbers, but at $10 for 100, I'll try the mason jar in the freezer idea (just in case I unexpectedly need some in the next few mths), but otherwise I toss them and get new ones. To me it's just not worth the risk of using bad ones, that might end up not working.

I need to find another place to buy oxygen absorbers. EE sells them, but they're $3.50 for 10.
That's outrageous. :frown2:

Try the church cannery, they are 13 cents each (new price increase) and they will sell you any number.

I haven't used it, but I think there is a church cannery site where you can order online.

The most recent batch I got was from Honeyville for the $10 per 100 price.
I bought them, at the store in Chandler, AZ, and don't know what the price might be online, but I can't imagine it being much different.
