View Full Version : Have you stocked diapers?

Just a thought for those of you who may have infants to care for in an extended disaster situation: have you stocked those old-fashioned cloth diapers? And large pins! I'm not sure that the bird's eye or gauze diapers are even available anymore. I remember my mother cutting up cotton flannel to make diapers for my younger siblings when she was expecting them. Very nice in winter, especially. I expect that the plastic panties to put over diapers are pretty scarce now, but you might improvise with Saran wrap maybe? I don't think that I'll have any infants to care for myself, but may put by some diapers and baby stuff, especially bottles and nipples, just in case, for less prepared neighbors. phylm

I used cloth diapers on my oldest kids. Since you can't store enough diapers and I have grandkids, I was thinking about buying flannel and storing it. Then if you don't need it, it could be used for other things.

I found cloth diapers at Walmart. They have two types. One is extra thick. I figure they could come in handy for a lot of first aid needs if they are not needed for diapers. I was thinking about 4 dozen. Any thoughts on how many? I would love to have tons of everything, but I don't live in a warehouse type box, so I have to draw the line somewhere.

I think 4 dozen sound good. If you figure 6 diapers a day then that would last 8 days or handle 2 babies for 4 days. Did they have plastic pants too? I think I'll get some - thanks for the tip - much easier to buy made than deal with flannel.

If you can't find them in the stores, you can certainly make them or order them off of the internet. Just google "Cloth diaper patterns" and a lot of choices will appear.

Here's a few:

I have never bought from this site, but I have heard of people buying humanitarian supplies from them. The baby diaper pins might be enough for a lot of babies...

The new style cloth diapers don't use diaper pins and plastic pants anymore. They use velcro or snaps and the water proof stuff is often built into the diaper. Just a few sites...

Personal theory:
After watching my children it is my conclusion that disposable lengthen the potty training time. They keep the child dry so that they do not see the relationship between wet bottom and physiological actions.
Convenient for the diaper manufacturer.

We really like the brand "fuzzi bunz". They are really well made and I have never seen an "accident".

I make my own cloth diaper, but you can find a ton of info on modern cloth diapers here www.diaperpin.com

I have cloth diapers left over from my last babies and have hung on to them. Also, has anyone heard of diaper free babies? I just started reading a book last night about it. I got another one in the mail today. Many third world countries don't use diapers and I used to wonder what they do. I'm not wondering so much anymore.

I think it is so wonderful that I am coming across ways to make survival better for women and babies. It is great considering that we don't know how long we will be able to run to a store, etc.

Hi, we just started using cloth diapers and haven't had a leak in a week. We just bought the cheap all in ones from ebay-probably made in Tiawan but they work. You're just not supposed to wash them in hot. We wash in warm with vinegar and baking soda and hang in the sun to disinfect. They have inserts so they dry quickly. If you need more insert you can do more flannel.
They were about 12 for $80 but they have the nice cover already on, no diaper pins, and easy to use, and her bum's not wet afterwards cause of the material next to the skin, it wicks it all into the liner.
We'll buy a couple nicer once too since we love the cloth diapers now.

Also on the cloth subject, look into cloth pads for women, they are so much nicer than their paper counterparts.
Danika, I wonder what brand of cloth diaper you have? I know the ones I make I can and do wash on hot.

Oops! When I first read this sentence I thought you wrote: Here is something babies might want to learn more about.

I thought it was funny. :lol (2):

This is a good idea- cloth diapers with plastic pants!

I also have been buying a box here and there of the *biodegradeable* baby wipes. I thought they might be good for the "sponge" baths if water goes out or something. Wal-Mart carries the Parents' Choice brand of these wipes.
