I ran across a website on how to make butter from powdered milk. I've tried it once so far and it turned out pretty good, although not as firm as I would like. I'm hoping with my second time I'll be more successful. But all this recipe requires is powdered milk, water, and some kind of oil. Everyone (unless they're lactose intolerant) should have those in their storage.

So did you utilize non-fat dried milk or whatever Nido is?

I just used a regular non-fat store brand. I'm going to try some church style dehydrated milk next. I'll let you know.
For the fat I used a mix of canola oil and olive oil.
It definitely smelled like powdered milk; nobody is going to be fooled into thinking it's butter. But it is a reasonably tasty replacement.
I haven't tried to bake with it, but that would be a worthy experiment.

It would be worth buying a can of the Emergency Essentials non-fat dry milk if you don't want the awful taste of most dried milk. I can actually drink their milk, and detect very little difference from regular milk.

I do use the store or church storehouse dried milk for cooking and baking, though.

Really appreciate this recipe. Going to try it! Thanks.

What kind of oil did you use?

I used a combination of olive oil and canola oil. Although I'm also thinking of using coconut oil because it is solid at room temperature.

I love making butter but never tried it from powdered milk. Thank-you

Pretty cool! Did you use the optional butter flavoring? If so, how much? That could make a big difference in the flavor, plus a bit of salt. Unfortunately, those optional ingredients didn't have measurements.

JenJen, do you plan on trying just the coconut oil, or mixing it with one of the other oils?

I happen to have coconut oil, so I will try it. I enjoy making butter from cow's milk. A little tip there is to add a little olive oil so its spreadable.
