This is much like "lasagna" gardening and it worked very well for me last year. I tried wood chips on top of plain subsoil this past fall and have found that I needed to put down compost instead of hoping it would "break down" over the winter. Last spring that is what I did and I have an increased amount of beautiful composted soil this spring to plant in.

However, the newspaper as weed control was either not thick enough or the wood chips were not deep enough as I still am getting bindweed and other "runner weeds" through the newspaper and so this year I am going to try thicker rolls of uninterrupted paper and thicker wood chips and hopefully it will help keep these runner weeds a bit more controlled for a longer period of time.

This garden is so much more beautiful than doing weed control using black plastic and it improves the quality of the soil as well. Really great stuff!

I also VERY MUCH like the idea of eventually not having to water my young trees as I have spent a goodly amount of my summer days watering young trees over the past 10 years only to have most of them die for various reasons.

Very interesting website. Thank you!

I have found that with runner-type weeds, all bets are off. Nothing but repeated weeding will do the trick.

Love this video! I'm working on starting a garden here using his methods.

As for watering trees, have you seen these:
