Just read one of the threads here asking how long popcorn was good for. Got me to thinking. Since I haven't used any of our popcorn yet and I'm used to microwave popcorn, what is a good popcorn popper that uses no electricity?

Thank you

I still do it the old fashioned way on the stove top. In a heavy skillet add just enough oil to cover the bottom, add 3 kernels and cover slightly (you want a little 'vent'), turn on the heat to med high, once you hear a kernel pop add the rest of the kernels (enough to cover the bottom of the pan), shake a few times while popping and turn off heat when you no longer hear popping. Pour into a bowl and add melted butter (real butter) and salt to taste. The last time we 'canned' popcorn was back in 2003 and I just opened the last can of it about a month ago, so far the kernels popped. Popcorn is on my to do list for this year because I didn't realize I had opened the last can, we went through it faster than I thought.

We have one of the old fashioned "fireplace" poppers with the long handle and a slide off lid. We use some coconut or vegetable oil and heat it over the gas burner on our stove. (of course you could do it over a campfire)
It really makes the best popcorn but it is less convenient because it is sort of a clean up job so we just usually use the plug in air popper.

I used to use libertygranny's way. Both give you good popcorn.

We have the same one that Mirk has, and have had it for years.
It came highly recommended by several friends (but we've never used it ourselves... just got it for when there would be no power).

That's what I'm after. Something that requires no electricity for when the time comes. Wanted to find out what kind makes really good popcorn. Where would be the best place to get one of the Whirley Pops?

I bought mine at Bed Bath and Beyond. Amazon.com has them. I've seen them in a number of department stores over the years.

I'm pretty sure we got ours at Wal-Mart.
But Mirk is right.... I've seen them at several places.

Curtis, what is the one you have made out of?
Is it a dark colored aluminum or some other metal?
I know the one we have is aluminum... so long term, not really sure how long it'll last.
Obviously taking care of it will make a difference, but aluminum will wear away quicker than most other metals.

It is steel. Looks good sitting next to the woodstove when not in use.
