I have been waiting for grain prices to come down because grain prices have been very low internationally and farmers are sitting on their crops waiting for prices to go back up. It makes sense that farmers will try to sell their crops themselves in order to make a profit rather than selling wholesale. So this KSL ad might be the beginning of that...

I like the popcorn price and the gallon container spices at Sam's Club. Rice is often cheaper at Costco and Sam's but you should check and compare with the church's price.

If you need containers, Industrial Container Supply has reasonable prices. They have a gallon and half gallon container that are clear and you can use oxygen packs in them. It is nice if you just want to keep a bit in your kitchen and the rest somewhere else.

Last year's wheat crop was 14.9 percent protein, this year's crop will be 13.5 percent protein according to Kitchen Kneads. I know some people only buy Kitchen Kneads wheat because it is a better quality, if that is so, perhaps you want to get your wheat now before the new crop comes in, in November.

A lot of canneries and stakes have canning machines you can borrow and take home to can in #10 sized cans at home. They sell all the supplies you need at the canneries. When comparing prices between the cannery and buying in buckets you probably want to compare the canned prices.

Have any of you used much of the wheat from the cannery? I don't care for it much as it has been quite dirty the last few times I used it. It is a fair amount cheaper though...

I was told that the wheat grinder manufacturer's won't guarantee their grinder if you use church wheat because it is so dirty and breaks some grinders.

That's what I have found. I could be wrong, but I don't think the church wheat is triple washed. I had a lot of grit and some small stones in the last back I opened.

I was able to purchase some wheat from Montana Milling thru a friend up there for $20 a bag. I have found that it is superior to most other available wheat. It is the same wheat sold by the Bosch Kitchen Centers. Lehi Roller Mills also has decent wheat but it has not been consistent. Some good, some bad.

Maybe I am a food snob... time for some self-evaluating I suppose.

I wonder what the price from local sources might be. We just placed an order in Nov. with a local farmer for wheat--$10 for 60 lbs, or about $16.80 for 100 lbs. And the pinto beans were $21 for 50lbs. The beans were only cleaned once, but the wheat was triple cleaned, so very nice wheat.

Except for the juice mix and potato pearls, all our local prices are the same or cheaper than HSC prices. And if you count in the 500 mi round trip to the cannery, we come out way ahead buying local.

Well that settles it for me. $250 mill or $4/bag savings. I've wondered what would happen if a small rock made it into the mill. I'm sure it would not end well.

On a side note, my 2 year old daughter can't get enough of the "monkey shooting the gun". I'm not sure if this is a good thing or not?

Just bumping this up so that you can see the changes.

Wheat is now $13 for 50 lbs at Honeyville (last I checked)

I saw 45 lb containers at Costco for $18 yesterday.

It is interesting that while packaged goods continue to get smaller and the boxes emptier, the actual prices of grains has been coming down.

A container of oats at the Case Lot Sale was around $12 if I remember right...

The internet prices are VERY different from their stores that are located in So. California, Arizona, SLC and in Honeyville Utah. But the good news is that conference is coming up. Perhaps some people could get friends or family who are attending to shop for them.

Honeyville in SLC is at the back of the SLC airport business complex off of I-80 for anyone coming in from California it especially is not too far out of the way.

These are the Brigham City Honeyville prices. They may be a little lower in SLC and higher in Arizona because of shipping costs. Also the 6 grain price is on special right now for bulk buyers... Please call ahead before going to buy as I may have done a typo, sales may have discontinued, etc....it's been known to happen...http://www.lds.net/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Potato 2 lb bag $5.79 Case of 10

6 Gallon Container $6.69 with regular lid

Char recommendations...each bean and grain have different amounts of nutrients and so it is good to get a variety of grains and beans if possible. That is why I included the 6 grain as a person buying their own (just one years worth) may want to have wheat, a six grain mix, parboiled rice (80 percent the nutrition of brown rice, brown rice is not recommended for longer-term storage), oats (oatmeal doesn't keep well so buy the whole grain and flake or sprout for breakfast cereal), and three kinds of beans for varied nutrition with the basics. <!-- / message --><!-- edit note -->

They claim that the dry ice method kills the germ for sprouting and that if you can keep it in a cool, dry place you don't need anything else for storage...I just talked to the expert about this for the Church and he says that carbon dioxide storage does not stop germination (sprouting) of wheat, buckets should be kept in dry conditions with low humidity (e.g. not where it is humid or stored directly on cement, dry ice must completely melt before sealing, etc)

How many lbs of foods will fit in a 6 gallon bucket?
45 lbs Hard Wheat
45 lbs Popcorn
25 lbs Oatmeal
44 lbs White Rice
44 lbs Barley
Rice will be fairly similar to other grains so here's some additional information I found regarding it...don't know about accuracy as I haven't checked this myself
There are about 12.5 cups of rice in a #10 can.
A #10 can of white rice contains 88 oz. (5.5 lb.)
1 cup of white rice weighs 7 oz.
1 six gallon bucket of white rice contains 43-44 lbs.
1 six gallon bucket of white rice = 8 #10 cans.
1 six gallon bucket of white rice contains 100 cups.
A typical serving is approximately 1/4 cup uncooked dry rice (1.75 oz.)
A resource that gives 1 gallon, 5 gallon and 6 gallon amounts for storage...

Using the Dry Ice Method with buckets (oxygen absorbers NOT recommended for plastic buckets as they are not completely air tight...unless you also use a mylar bag and heat seal the bag instructions are found on youtube - good method for humid areas)

Instructions are found under packaging in Provident Living
https://www.lds.org/family/family-well-being/home-storage/longer-term-food-supply?lang=eng#3

Another good article is found here...
https://www.usaemergencysupply.com/information_center/packing_your_own_food_storage/dry_ice_in_food_preservation.htm

**Do not store plastic buckets directly on cement as moisture will travel through the plastic eventually (can stack on wood strips that provide an air space)

**Do not use this method if you must package or store under humid conditions, try to make sure no water type ice crystals makes it into the bucket as this will add moisture (can be on the plastic that you buy the dry ice in)

***Do not store more than 3 high and sometimes they can cracks when they freeze

Bare bone beans and wheat...
$32.00 for 50 pounds of White Beans at Lds Home Storage Center
$ 8.50 for 2 #10 Cans (5.3 lbs per can) $4.25 per Can of Beans
------
$40.50 Total for 60 pounds of Beans

$81.54 Total for 300 pounds of Wheat from Honeyville Grains
______
$122.04 Total for Wheat and Beans

***
Packaging
~45 lbs of Wheat will fit into a 6 gallon "super-pail" plastic food grade bucket
~40 lbs Beans per 6 gallon container

To Package You Will Need

Wheat Math
300 lbs wheat /45 lbs per bucket = 6 and 2/3 buckets or 30 lbs left over
30 lbs wheat will fill 6 #10 cans (30/5.5)

Bean Math
50 lbs (we already have 2 full cans beans for the other 10 lbs needed)
50 lbs of beans/40 lbs per bucket leaves a remainder of 10 lbs which will fit into two cans

So what you would need for packaging...
$35.35 A year supply is 7 6-gallon containers ($5.05 each)
$ 8.00 6 #10 empty cans for Wheat and 2 empty #10 cans for Beans (~$1.00)
-------
$43.35

$3 for ~3 pounds dry ice (Costs ~$1-2/lb) figuring 1 oz/gallon space...there are 42 gallons of space so 42 ounces needed

[B]$46.35 for Packaging

$122.04 Wheat and Beans
46.35 Packaging
______
$168.39 Total for Basic Year Supply Canned for longer-term storage using the Cheapest Grains and Beans

or

12 X $22 = $264 for 12 Starter Kits 3 Wheat, Rice, Bean, Oatmeal at LDS Cannery

(Oatmeal will need to be rotated regularly) This is the price IF you can pick it up at a Home Storage Center Location

http://www.providentliving.org/pfw/multimedia/files/pfw/pdf/123141_HSC_OrderFormUS_EngNov2011_pdf.pdf

if it needs to be shipped to you via the LDS Catalog it would cost

12 X $31 = $372 (includes shipping last I checked and each box weighs 30 pounds!)

Starter Kit - LDS Online Store (http://store.lds.org/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product3_715839595_10557_21003_-1__195787)

Char's Recommendations...if I were buying just for one person and could spend a bit more I would buy two different kinds of beans like Kidney (Chile/Stews) and White (Baking bean "flour"/Soups/Bean "butter" for baking, and toasted beans and sprouting for snacks).

I would buy a variety of grains, e.g. parboiled rice, popcorn, oat groats, six grain mix of grains and White and Red Wheat.

A grinder is great to have, but you can also sprout most beans and wheat seeds for added nutrition (if the weather isn't too cold and you have enough water, supplies, etc.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but UT grows a lot of wheat doesn't it? I buy my wheat directly from the farmers here in ND and get it it quite a bit cheaper than these prices. It's just seems that if you could go direct to the farmer or at the very least the grain elevator, cutting out the middle man would save a lot of money. We just bought hard white wheat with very high protein content--15%--which makes for fluffier bread. $12 for 50 lbs.
