I called Nampak (some time ago) and found out that their new seconds cost $2.12 each for a five gallon container. You most buy a pallet (120) at a time. They come with a cover with a gasket for a tighter seal. They only accept checks. You must give them 24 hours notice. Sounds like a pretty good deal if a group can go in together.

I have lost the contact information for the person to contact. If someone is interested and finds out more about this, I would appreciate the name and information regarding these 5 gallon "seconds," i.e. how much they are now, if you bought them and liked them, etc.

Five gallon containers are sometimes given away by bakeries or the bakery section at the supermarkets.

The church Welfare Square cannery sells 4 gallon containers that have had fruit puree in them for 50 cents.

Payson Fruit Growers
also has very low cost 4 gallon used containers. I believe you can google them for their location, etc.

(If you have a low humidity, colder storage you may be able to use diatomaceous earth and bay leaves instead of using a mylar bag.) Make sure that you get all plastic food containers off the ground, particularly concrete. I was told 1/2 inch with air space is enough. The lady at the church cannery recommended using CO2 (dried ice) for storing food in plastic containers without mylar and oxygen absorbers (make sure you find the instructions on the web because if you throw the stuff in and seal the container it can explode, kind of like dried ice in a pop bottle).

The bakeries at Costco will save them for you and give them for free.
